Red Sox infielder Lowrie still feeling pain from collision
It's been more than two weeks since infielder Jed Lowrie(notes) and left fielder Carl Crawford(notes) collided while going after a fly ball, but Lowrie has been sore ever since. And the Boston Herald reports that the pain got even worse Thursday while he was batting in the first inning of a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Lowrie told manager Terry Francona he feared a subluxation of his shoulder, like the joint had "slipped out," the Herald reports.
Lowrie was pulled from the game to be examined. It was determined that the shoulder never popped out, but the Sox will give Lowrie "further tests" Friday to try and discover the source of the pain. The paper notes that Lowrie had an MRI last week that showed no structural damage.
"I don't really know what's going on," Lowrie said, the Herald reports. "I just know what I felt. I certainly wasn't this sore [previously]."

Yankees stealing signs?
New York Yankees outfielder Andruw Jones(notes) was standing on second base in the fifth inning of a 12-4 thrashing of the Texas Rangers Wednesday when he suddenly started to get yelled at by the catcher for Texas, Yorvit Torrealba(notes).
Torrealba thought Jones was trying to steal signs and was not happy about it, according to the Dallas Morning News.
"We could all be wrong, but we could all be right," Torrealba said after the game, the Morning News reports. "So, I decided to say something. I don't take it personally. I don't take any credit from them. I don't even think they needed to do that. We were making a lot of bad pitches, and they hit a lot of mistakes."

Kazmir returning to the Mets?
The last time Scott Kazmir(notes) was a member of the New York Mets, it was 2004, he was the team's top pitching prospect and he was being told he was getting shipped to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as part of a trade for Victor Zambrano. Zambrano went 10-14 over the next three seasons for New York while Kazmir earned two All-Star appearances in Florida.
Now Kazmir has been released by the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are considering bringing the 27-year-old lefty back.
Kazmir has been with Anaheim since 2009 and hasn't pitched well. This year, he has a 17.02 ERA -- and that's in Triple-A. In the bigs this season, his ERA is 27.00. Ouch.
"We look at everybody who hits the wire, and the same would apply to him," said Mets GM Sandy Alderson in a typically bland statement, according to the Daily News.

Cardinals snagging Phillies' J.C. Romero?
Looks like reliever J.C. Romero(notes) isn't going to get another chance to win a World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies. The club has designated him for assignment to make room for rookie pitcher Vance Worley(notes) on the roster, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears that the St. Louis Cardinals may be snagging the 35-year-old lefty.
The emergence of 25-year-old lefty Antonio Bastardo(notes) for the Phils has made Romero dispensable. Bastardo has a 1.05 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings.
Two left-handers already hold down spots in the Cardinals' bullpen but one of them, Brian Tallet(notes), may be the man Romero ends up replacing. Tallet has a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. Romero's ERA this year is 3.86 in 16 1/3 innings.

Diamondbacks bringing up Wily Mo Pena?

MLB investigation of Dodgers expands
The intense investigation of the Los Angeles Dodgers by Major League Baseball has not just been about the team's financial troubles, sources tell the Los Angeles Times.
Some of the people who have been interviewed by MLB officials have also been asked about security at the stadium as well. Obviously, this is a hot-button issue around the Dodgers since Giants fan Bryan Stow was critically injured after being attacked by two Dodger fans in the stadium's parking lot on opening day.
At the time of the attack, the Times reported that a full-time head of security hadn't been on staff for four months and that owner Frank McCourt "had replaced many uniformed police officers with private security personnel."
The Times reports that MLB has asked for interviews with some former team execs, though it isn't clear how many.
"Baseball's investigation is now nearing its conclusion, bringing a possible end to the bimonthly questions about whether Dodgers owner Frank McCourt will make payroll," the Times writes. "McCourt has said the Dodgers' financial fortunes depend upon approval of a proposed long-term television contract with FOX, a deal commissioner Bud Selig has said he would not consider until the investigation was complete."

Astros' Lyon headed to surgery?
Houston Astros reliever Brandon Lyon(notes) isn't exactly having a season he'll want to remember. The team put him on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis Wednesday and he may be headed to surgery. It's his second visit to the DL this year.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Lyon will visit Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday to figure out if he needs to go under the knife or not.
In four of his last five appearances, Lyon has given up a homer. His ERA currently stands at 11.48 and he's only struck out six in 13.1 innings pitched. He's also blown four saves in the 15 games he's appeared in. Last year, he blew only two in the 79 games he appeared in.
"There's definitely some issues in my shoulder right now and it's definitely an option," Lyon said of surgery, according to the Chronicle. "I just want to get a grasp on it and talk to some other people and get some options on it.""

Giants seeking catcher from Rangers?
The San Francisco Giants have gone 7-3 in the last 10 games and managed to stay in first place in the National League West, despite losing 2010 NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey(notes) for the rest of the season.
Catchers Eli Whiteside(notes) and Chris Stewart(notes) aren't exactly bringing it offensively for the Giants in Posey's absence. CBSSports.com reports that the pair have hit .189 with no homers and two RBIs in the 19 games after Posey got hurt in collision at home plate.
So the team is looking for a catcher on the trade market and CBS reports that San Fran has targeted the Texas Rangers as its latest trading partner.
The Rangers have backup catcher Mike Napoli(notes) on the disabled list, but when he returns, the Rangers "may be willing to move a catcher."
Starter Yorvit Torrealba's(notes) backup is now Taylor Teagarden(notes), who "was hitting .326 with nine home runs in 24 games" for the Triple-A Round Rock Express, the site reports.

Nationals' LaRoche done for season
Washington Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche(notes) has been on the disabled list with a torn labrum in his left shoulder since late May. Nats fans needn't keep wondering when he'll return this season because the Washington Post reports that LaRoche will have season-ending surgery Thursday.
Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said LaRoche will be back next season even though, the Post points out, "the extent of the injury and its rehabilitation are unknown until LaRoche is under the knife."
In the 43 games he played this year, LaRoche batted .143 with three home runs. Last year, he had 25 homers and batted .261.
"If all goes right," Rizzo said, according to the Post, "he will be 100 percent by the beginning of spring training next year."

Marlins' Johnson not back till after All-Star break
The Florida Marlins were one of the surprise teams at the start of the season, keeping pace with the league-leading Philadelphia Phillies. So it's been a sad run for the team recently, going 3-15 since May 27 and 1-11 in the month of June. Tuesday night, the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves while the Marlins fell to the Phils 9-1. This caused the Marlins to fall to fourth place in the National League East standings.
And the news keeps getting worse. To make room for the Triple-A pitcher Elih Villanueva (4-5, 5.23 ERA in 13 starts for the New Orleans Zephyrs), who is being called up to start the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, the Marlins had to move ace Josh Johnson(notes) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day, meaning he won't return till after the All-Star break, according to the Miami Herald.
Johnson has been on the DL with right shoulder inflammation since May 16. In his nine starts this season, he's gone 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA.
