Pirates Acquire McKenry From Red Sox

Pirates Acquire McKenry From Red Sox

The Pirates have acquired catcher Mike McKenry in a trade with the Red Sox, a source tells Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Boston will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com (via Twitter).

Pittsburgh has been in search of a catcher ever since losing Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder to the disabled list. Manager Clint Hurdle recently admitted that the club was having a hard time acquiring a catcher as clubs were looking to take advantage of their situation. The club could potentially be without Doumit until the end of July and without Snyder all season.

McKenry, 26, spent the first five years of his career with the Rockies organization before being dealt to the Red Sox in late March. In 127 career Triple-A games, McKenry has a slash line of .268/.337/.425 with 13 homers.

Summer Collegiate Baseball is designed to allow the best in collegiate baseball talent to further develop their skills and competition. There are several leagues and teams which operate throughout the country to prepare players who wish to move into professional baseball the opportunity to develop the playing stamina needed for professional baseball, as well as giving them hands on experience playing competitively with wood bats as opposed to the aluminum bats used by the NCAA.
In the early 1990s, Major League Baseball created sanctioning bodies and several new leagues so that levels of play and player development in Summer Collegiate Baseball could be regulated. At the creation of these regulatory bodies, Major League Baseball began subsidizing the development of Summer Collegiate Baseball with the intention that athletes who choose to attend college would not fall behind athletes who instead choose to enter rookie leagues right out of high school, or players coming up through the MLB subsidized Central American development leagues.
Many major league players have come through the Summer Collegiate system, and many more are sure to come.

The NACSB (National Alliance of College Summer Baseball) would like to congratulate Coach Tim Corbin and Vanderbilt University for winning the NACSB Annual Most Valuable Program Award. The award is intended to recognize one college or university coach each year that has had the greatest impact on advancing the goals and objectives of the NACSB. The prestigious award was presented during the divisional business meeting at the ABCA Convention in Nashville this past January.

In 2010, a total of 510 colleges and universities sent players to summer programs and each was considered. To be considered for the award, at least one student athlete from the coach’s college must sign a Letter of Commitment to an NACSB league and participate in the league for that year. Points are awarded to the school based on players’ participation as well as performance. Vanderbilt University produced many gifted student-athletes that earned the school and Coach Corbin the annual award for 2010.

The NACSB would also like to congratulate the other two finalists for the award, Central Florida and Coach Terry Rooney, as well as Appalachian State and Coach Chris Pollard. Their student athletes did a fantastic job of representing their schools and coaches and finished tied for second place in the final vote tally.

The NACSB is an alliance of nine nationally recognized college summer baseball leagues that aims to promote communication, financial security, marketing, and improve communication between member leagues and college coaches. The NACSB follows all NCAA guidelines and regulations and includes the most prestigious summer college leagues in the country. For more information, go to nacsb.org.
