Report: Realignment Possible In MLB
Major League Baseball and the players' association are reportedly considering a simple realignment that would move one team from the National League to the American League while eliminating divisions entirely.
Buster Olney of ESPN reports that with 15 teams in both league and no divisions, each league to would vie for five playoff spots.
Currently, there are 16 teams in the NL and 14 in the AL, with four postseason berths per league.
According to one source, there is a 50-50 chance of the realignment occurring.
Which team would switch from the NL to the AL would likely be the most complicating matter of the realignment. The report states that the Houston Astros could be a possibility in order to create a rivalry with the Texas Rangers.
