York Post 56 ousted in American Legion state tournament

AUGUSTA, Maine — A strong season came to an end for the York Post 56 American Legion baseball team on Thursday.
York suffered a 9-2 loss to Bessey Motors (Oxford Hills) in the losers’ bracket of the state tournament at McGuire Field and was eliminated from contention.
Post 56, the Zone 5 champion, was making its first appearance in the state tournament. York lost to Bangor, 4-2, in Wednesday’s opener.
“This was a phenomenal experience and a great venue for our kids,” said York coach Chuck Chadbourne. “There were success stories all across the board.”
York advanced to the state tournament with a 13-12 win over top-seeded Saco in the Zone 5 championship game. It stayed close with defending state champion Bessey Motors on Thursday, trailing just 4-2 in the seventh inning. Bessey Motors pulled away in the late innings, however, despite getting outhit 8-7.
“I couldn’t be more proud of their effort,” said Chadbourne. “I think when we played Bangor real tough and didn’t have anything to show for it, our kids started pressing a bit.”
Chris Cole (3-for-4) and Arran Maran (2-for-4) were York’s top hitters Thursday. Tanner Chase added a double and RBI.
Adam Bailey started on the mound for Post 56, allowing two hits and four runs in four innings.
