MLB still investigating A-Rod's doc
It's been only days since Alex Rodriguez(notes) was cleared by the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball of doing anything wrong by having his cousin, who has been banned from specific Yankees areas, travel with him. But now news comes out from the New York Times that Rodriguez isn't quite in the clear yet on a different matter.
Just before the 2010 season got underway, A-Rod sat down with MLB investigators to talk to them about a Canadian doctor, Dr. Anthony Galea, that he had worked with and was suspected by the federal government of distributing performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Times reports. In the course of the conversation, Rodriguez told the investigators that Galea had never given him any such drugs, the paper notes.
"Fourteen months later, the investigators for baseball still have not accepted those answers as fact and are trying to determine what the doctor, Anthony Galea, might have given Rodriguez, according to several people briefed on the federal investigation," the Times reports.
The investigators are currently trying to get the medical records Galea had for Rodriguez, the paper notes.
"Alex fully cooperated with Major League Baseball and federal authorities in Buffalo regarding his treatment with Dr. Galea, including granting a release of his medical records," a statement from Rodriguez's lawyers, James E. Sharp and Jay K. Reisinger, to the Times said.

Jake Peavy headed back to DL?
Jake Peavy(notes) joined the rotation of the Chicago White Sox less than a month ago when he returned from shoulder surgery. Now it appears that he's headed back to the disabled list.
A strained right groin caused Peavy to leave the game Sunday after four innings against the Detroit Tigers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
‘‘I'll probably miss more time now,'' Peavy said, according to the paper. ‘‘We'll evaluate it and see some doctors, but it'd be hard for this thing to just go away. We have a lot of equipment [for treatment], but the way I feel when I walk, [the disabled list] is a pretty safe bet.''
The White Sox are now 28-33 and sitting in third place in the American League Central.

Pitch takes out Nationals' Harper
Bryce Harper(notes), the Washington Nationals' top pick of the 2010 draft, stepped to the plate Sunday for the Class A Hagerstown Suns and was "hit in the lower leg on the first pitch of his first at-bat," according to MLB.com.
Upon being hit, the 18-year-old Harper sat down in the batter's box and held his legs, the site reports, and he had a hard time standing up.
The site notes that Harper will be evaluated Monday morning after having to leave the game.
"He'll be all right, I think it's more precautionary," said Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman(notes), who was also playing in the game on a rehab assignment.
Harper is batting .338 with 13 homers and 41 RBIs so far this year.

Mets' Beltran missing a few days?
The shin guard didn't do anything for New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran(notes). He fouled a pitch off his right leg in the second inning Sunday, "stumbled behind the batter's box and pitched forward into the grass," according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
He tried to stand twice, but fell back to his knees, dealing with pain, dizziness, and nausea, the paper notes.
"It was bad," Beltran said, the paper reports. "I have hurt myself like that before. That's why I wear a shin guard. But not like today."
X-rays taken after the eventual 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves were negative, but it remains unclear if Beltran was hurt badly enough to head to the disabled list where he could spend some time with Ike Davis(notes), David Wright(notes), and Johan Santana(notes).

Rangers' Tommy Hunter to again start rehab games
Texas Rangers pitcher Tommy Hunter(notes) was supposed to be back in the rotation already, helping his team get back to the World Series. But, well, straining his groin on what was likely his last planned rehab pitch three weeks ago kind of changed all that.
The Dallas Morning News now reports that Hunter is getting set to start the rehab process all over again this weekend.
Hunter will take the mound Saturday for the Triple-A Round Rock Express and pitch two innings against the Albuquerque Isotopes, the paper reports.
Even though the Rangers have a stocked rotation, the team is not planning for Hunter to pitch in relief. Manager Ron Washington said he'd like to see Hunter pitch six innings or about 90 pitches before the club is ready to activate him, the paper reports.

Mauer feels 'real good' behind plate
The "bilateral weakness" that put Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer(notes) on the disabled list early this season appears to not be such an issue at this point. He finally strapped on catcher's gear and got down on his haunches behind the plate for some game action Thursday in an extended spring training game.
The 2009 American League MVP may have gone 0 for 5 at the plate but, more importantly, he "felt real good" behind the plate, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
"I didn't have the pain that I've been having in a lot of different areas," Mauer said, according to the paper.
Mauer also said his shoulder problems began last season when he was "compensating for other injuries," the paper reports.
"My shoulder was hurting last year, but my arm hasn't felt this good in a long time, so it's encouraging definitely," he said. "I'm able to move a lot better, and the ball is coming out of my hand a lot better than what it was. So yeah, slowly getting back to where I need to get to."

Rays' Kotchman returning Saturday?
Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Casey Kotchman(notes) has been out of action since Sunday when he sprained his right ankle in a game against the Cleveland Indians. MLB.com reports that he should be back in the lineup Saturday when the Rays do battle against the Seattle Mariners.
"He's getting better," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, according to the site. "[Head athletic trainer] Ronnie [Porterfield] thought that he was getting better, looked better. Hopefully, he's going to be on track for Saturday."
The Rays miss both his bat (.361 batting average) and his glove: MLB.com points out that Kotchman has made just nine errors in 5,168 total chances in his career, a .998 fielding percentage, the best in league history.
"He's one of the best at what he does," Maddon said, MLB.com reports. "We win games because we pitch well and play defense. When you get a defender of his caliber out of the game, it really matters.""

Boston's Okajima hopes for a trade
Hideki Okajima(notes) has been a reliever for the Boston Red Sox since joining the league in 2007. Now he's hoping to ply his trade in another big league city, according to the Boston Globe.
Okajima currently is on the roster of the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, where he started the season, but he didn't want to be called up to replace the injured Rich Hill(notes). "I'd rather not be called up in this situation,'' he said, the Globe reports.
Okajima was called up earlier this season and went 1-0 with a 4.37 ERA over 8.1 innings in seven games. He was designated for assignment on May 20, cleared waivers and rejoined Pawtucket. "It's definitely a new start for me,'' Okajima said, the Globe reports. "I'm in a new position. It's all about pitching well and hopefully along the line another team will show more interest in me and I can be traded."

Giants' Sandoval and Zito starting rehab assignments
Barry Zito(notes) has won 40 games for the San Francisco Giants since joining the team in 2007. He's also lost 58. The injured hurler who was expected to be a much bigger winner for the Giants when he signed what was then the largest contract for a pitcher in league history -- seven years, $126 million -- is on the disabled list but about to start a minor league rehab stint, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The paper reports that Zito will be taking his 6.23 ERA and sprained right foot to the Single-A San Jose Sharks on Monday.
Before he gets there, though, the San Jose squad will be joined by Pablo Sandoval(notes) on Friday as he works on recovering from surgery on his right wrist. The expectation is that Sandoval will play a couple of games there and then move up to the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies for a few games before returning to the Giants, the Bee notes.
