There may be older monuments, more significant historical sites, and ancient burial grounds in the nation, but today I'm going to use this space afforded me to celebrate one of the greatest examples of living history in the nation. For it was exactly 99 years ago today that the first Major League baseball game was played at
Fenway Park! Since that day, the historic yard has served as host to several thousand
Red Sox games, hundreds of amateur baseball games, Boston Patriots games, collegiate football games, political rallies, concerts, naturalization ceremonies, and a wrestling match (just to name a few events).
I'm not really supposed to go into great detail as to what's being planned for today's birthday party (this e-mail has already been edited three times over because I tried to say too much - the powers that be don't like ruining a good surprise), but I can tell you that today's celebration will offer a preview of things to come for the historic Fenway Park 100th Anniversary (set for 2012). I can also tell you that there will be ample opportunity to have fans weigh-in on how we should celebrate the 100th including a chance to etch your own name into Fenway's history.
