South Carolina on verge of joining list of repeat CWS Champions
South Carolina won a thriller over Florida in extra innings to take the first game of the final round of the 2011 College World Series. It marked the 10th straight win in Omaha for the Gamecocks. One more win would put them on the short list of teams to repeat as College World Series champions. There have been five different schools to accomplish this feat, meaning South Carolina would be joining an exclusive list. Here are the five previous repeat winners at the College World Series.
Oregon State - 2006 and 2007
The Beavers defeated North Carolina both years they won the College World Series. They were especially dominant in 2007. After sneaking into the NCAA tournament, the Beavers rolled to Omaha. They didn't drop a game there, winning all but one of their games by at least six runs.
LSU - 1996 and 1997
The Tigers were already an established team by the time they won consecutive titles. In 1997, the Tigers won all four of their games, scoring at least 10 runs in three of them. Before that in 1996, they won all four of their games as well. They were much more contested as LSU won three games by a single run.
Stanford - 1987 and 1988
The Cardinal won two straight College World Series titles in the late 1980s. In 1987, they avenged a loss to Oklahoma State by defeating them in the final game. In 1988, Stanford lost an earlier game to Cal State Fullerton but survived by beating them twice after that. They knocked off Arizona State in the final game. In both years Stanford was considered a long shot.
USC - 1970 through 1974
The Trojans won the College World Series five straight times, giving them the most dominant run in college baseball. Their two most memorable wins came in 1972 and 1973, when they defeated Arizona State by one run in the final game each year. Among the stars on those USC teams was Dave Winfield, who was the MVP in 1973.
Texas - 1949 and 1950
The Longhorns have made more trips to the College World Series than any other team. They won six titles overall, including two in a row in 1949 and 1950. They defeated Wake Forest for the crown in 1949 and Washington State in 1950.
