A field of 30 candidates for the 2011 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best player in amateur baseball, has been narrowed to three junior pitchers.
USA Baseball announced on Monday that right-hander Trevor Bauer of University of California, Los Angeles; left-hander Danny Hultzen of the University of Virginia; and right-hander Taylor Jungmann of the University of Texas received the most votes last week from a nearly 200-person committee.
No previous GSA finalist class had been exclusively made up of pitchers. This is the 34th consecutive year the award has been given.
"In a year of incredible performances from players across the diamond, our voting committee felt that three pitchers stood out above the rest," USA Baseball executive director and CEO Paul Seiler said in a statement. "We congratulate Trevor Bauer, Danny Hultzen and Taylor Jungmann, along with their coaching staffs, teammates and their schools' baseball programs."
Those on the voting committee could choose a finalist starting at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Fans can vote as well by visiting www.GoldenSpikesAward.com.
Balloting for fans and the voting body ends at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, June 17.
Bauer was Collegiate Baseball magazine's National Player of the Year and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Year. He set the conference single-season record for strikeouts with 203, one more than Mark Prior notched for Southern California in 2001. Bauer went 13-2 and threw 10 complete games en route to becoming the first GSA finalist from UCLA since Troy Glaus in 1997.
Hultzen became the first Virginia Cavaliers baseball player to be named a three-time All-American, going 11-3 with a 1.57 ERA. He's a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and he can also hit, posting a .336 average with 10 doubles, two triples and a home run this season. The Cavaliers' last finalist was Seth Greisinger, in 1996.
Jungmann was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year after going 13-1 with a 1.40 ERA. Opponents hit .168 off him and he threw five complete games, striking out 119. The Longhorns last had a finalist in 2007, in outfielder Kyle Russell.
The GSA will be presented live on MLB Network for the first time this year, at 6 p.m. ET on July 15 as part of the MLB Tonight program. Online footage will also be available via GoldenSpikesAward.com and MLB.com.

UCLA's Cole goes to Pirates at No. 1
Right-hander is fourth player drafted by Pittsburgh first overall
By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 06
That anticipation for the Cole family and everyone else following the 2011 First-Year Player Draft eventually ended, as shortly after 7 p.m. ET on Monday, Selig let everyone in on Cole's little secret. He was -- after months of being heavily scouted and weeks of having his credentials exhaustively compared to those of a handful of other top amateur players -- the Pirates' selection with the first overall pick.
And fitting it was that the right-handed starter out of UCLA opted for the suspenseful route because so, too, did the Pirates.

A group of amateur pitchers and position players was still in the mix for that top pick as recently as last week. And though eyebrows were raised throughout the spring by Cole's less-than-stellar results, the Pirates were never deterred.
"If we were focused on taking the player who performed the best this year, there might have been other options," general manager Neal Huntington said. "Our focus is selecting the player that we believe is going to be the best for the organization two, four, six, eight, 10 years from now.
"He's maturing into something pretty good before our eyes, and we felt that he had the biggest impact for us potentially of anybody on the board."
Cole became the fourth player taken first overall by Pittsburgh, which previously used the top pick to select Jeff King (1986), Kris Benson (1996) and Bryan Bullington (2002). None of those three turned out to be the superstar that the Pirates hope they have with Cole.
The right-hander has all sorts of assets that scouts love when projecting future results, beginning with his build. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound starter shows every sign of being a durable rotation workhouse.
Then, there's the arm.
Not only does his fastball sit consistently in the mid-90s deep into starts, but it has touched 100 mph a number of times. His slider and changeup are also already advanced pitches, too, which suggests Cole could be on the fast track to the big leagues.
"I feel like pitching [at UCLA] the last three years in that role has really fine-tuned my competitiveness and discipline," Cole said. "[I'm] trying to be that rock you can go to and you know what you're going to get."
Control hasn't been an issue this year. However, command has sometimes been a different story. Cole finished his junior season 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 16 starts, and those numbers hardly stand out (for the good, at least) on his own UCLA staff. Opponents hit .242 off the right-hander, who gave up 103 hits in 114 1/3 innings.
The problem, according to scouts, is that Cole's release point was causing his pitches to come in over the plate too often and with little deception. That is something that the Pirates believe can be corrected through some work with Cole's mechanics.
"We do see some things that we feel on the surface we can help," Huntington said, "but most important, we've got to gain his trust before we start doing anything."
When that time is right, the organization will have an eager pupil.
"Obviously, your goal is to get better every day," Cole said. "If there are some flaws that you need to correct, I feel that I have a lot of aptitude and that I have a knack for learning. Getting after it is definitely what I would like to do."
There's a natural follow up to that, which, of course, is how long until that process can begin? Cole, who is advised by agent Scott Boras, has until Aug. 15 to come to an agreement with the Pirates. In two of the past three seasons, the Pirates have not been able to sign their first pick until the final hours of the negotiating period.
As much as the Pirates would love for that not to be the case -- a quick resolution would allow Cole to spend some time on the mound this summer -- that appears an unlikely occurrence. The Pirates paid a franchise-high $6.5 million to No. 2 overall pick Jameson Taillon last summer, and Cole's demands are certain to exceed that.
If Cole doesn't sign until mid-August -- and all indications are that he will eventually sign -- he's unlikely to begin his professional career until next spring.
"I really have no expectations going into that situation," Cole said. "I'm going to let Pittsburgh and their guys do the evaluation. Obviously, you want the business side of things to go as smoothly as possible, but I understand there is another side having gone through this before. I feel like I'm prepared."
Prepared he is, given that this is not an entirely new process to Cole. He was taken by the Yankees with the No. 28 overall pick in 2008 before opting to go to college. He didn't go so far as to entertain an offer from New York at the time, though he got a taste of how the business side of baseball works.
As for that decision to head to UCLA, it did nothing but further boost his stock.
"I think I've learned a lot of things," said Cole, born and raised in Southern California. "You can't really sum it all up in one sentence. There are a lot of different aspects of the game that I have fine-tuned. There are a lot of things that you learn and you really don't expect to learn, and that's not something that shows up in the box score or the statistics."
Projecting how long it might take Cole to ascend to the Majors was not a topic Huntington engaged in on Monday night. And really, there are too many factors -- including how long it might take to sign Cole -- to make such a guess.
What the organization is free to begin dreaming about is all the pitching it has stockpiled in the past few summers. Assuming Cole gets signed, the Pirates will, by all unbiased accounts, have a terrific group of pitching prospects on their hands.
The organization spent $11.35 million in the span of a week last August to secure three highly touted pitchers, the oldest of which just turned 20 in March. Along with Taillon, Stetson Allie and Luis Heredia, Cole would give the Pirates a significant boost in their efforts to develop starting pitching through the organization's farm system.
That doesn't even touch on the handful of higher-level pitching prospects the Pirates believe have long-term big league potential, too.
"Pitching is a game of attrition," Huntington said. "You can never have too much of it. It's a valuable commodity in our game."
Asked what he knew about Taillon, Cole noted the obvious: "I know he's really good. I know he's a big dude. I've seen some pictures of him."
His familiarity with the city of Pittsburgh is also limited mostly to generalities. He mentioned Roberto Clemente, the franchise's tradition, the ballpark and, of course, the Steelers.
But Cole will have plenty of time to educate himself on all things Pittsburgh because now all he can do is wait. His collegiate season came to a disappointing end on Sunday with a loss in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional, meaning that he has some time on his hands while he waits for negotiations to commence.
As for the Pirates, their work continues in earnest. Though Cole was the team's only selection on Monday, the club will make 49 more beginning on Tuesday, starting with the first pick in Round 2.

- It's been only days since Alex Rodriguez(notes) was cleared by the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball of doing anything wrong by having his cousin, who has been banned from specific Yankees areas, travel with him. But now news comes out from the New York Times that Rodriguez isn't quite in the clear yet on a different matter.
Just before the 2010 season got underway, A-Rod sat down with MLB investigators to talk to them about a Canadian doctor, Dr. Anthony Galea, that he had worked with and was suspected by the federal government of distributing performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Times reports. In the course of the conversation, Rodriguez told the investigators that Galea had never given him any such drugs, the paper notes.
"Fourteen months later, the investigators for baseball still have not accepted those answers as fact and are trying to determine what the doctor, Anthony Galea, might have given Rodriguez, according to several people briefed on the federal investigation," the Times reports.
The investigators are currently trying to get the medical records Galea had for Rodriguez, the paper notes.
"Alex fully cooperated with Major League Baseball and federal authorities in Buffalo regarding his treatment with Dr. Galea, including granting a release of his medical records," a statement from Rodriguez's lawyers, James E. Sharp and Jay K. Reisinger, to the Times said.

Source: New York Times - The Houston Astros sit firmly in last place in the National League Central and can use all the help they can get. It may be on the way in the form of Wandy Rodriguez(notes).
MLB.com reports that the lefty Rodriguez and his troubled left elbow may be back in the rotation on June 13 against the Atlanta Braves. Rodriguez has a rehab start scheduled in Double-A on Wednesday.
"I'm ready to go," said Rodriguez, according to the site. "I don't have any problems."
So far this season, Rodriguez has gone 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched.

Source: MLB.com - Jake Peavy(notes) joined the rotation of the Chicago White Sox less than a month ago when he returned from shoulder surgery. Now it appears that he's headed back to the disabled list.
A strained right groin caused Peavy to leave the game Sunday after four innings against the Detroit Tigers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
‘‘I'll probably miss more time now,'' Peavy said, according to the paper. ‘‘We'll evaluate it and see some doctors, but it'd be hard for this thing to just go away. We have a lot of equipment [for treatment], but the way I feel when I walk, [the disabled list] is a pretty safe bet.''
The White Sox are now 28-33 and sitting in third place in the American League Central.

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Bryce Harper(notes), the Washington Nationals' top pick of the 2010 draft, stepped to the plate Sunday for the Class A Hagerstown Suns and was "hit in the lower leg on the first pitch of his first at-bat," according to MLB.com.
Upon being hit, the 18-year-old Harper sat down in the batter's box and held his legs, the site reports, and he had a hard time standing up.
The site notes that Harper will be evaluated Monday morning after having to leave the game.
"He'll be all right, I think it's more precautionary," said Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman(notes), who was also playing in the game on a rehab assignment.
Harper is batting .338 with 13 homers and 41 RBIs so far this year.

Source: MLB.com - The shin guard didn't do anything for New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran(notes). He fouled a pitch off his right leg in the second inning Sunday, "stumbled behind the batter's box and pitched forward into the grass," according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
He tried to stand twice, but fell back to his knees, dealing with pain, dizziness, and nausea, the paper notes.
"It was bad," Beltran said, the paper reports. "I have hurt myself like that before. That's why I wear a shin guard. But not like today."
X-rays taken after the eventual 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves were negative, but it remains unclear if Beltran was hurt badly enough to head to the disabled list where he could spend some time with Ike Davis(notes), David Wright(notes), and Johan Santana(notes).

Source: Newark Star-Ledger - Texas Rangers pitcher Tommy Hunter(notes) was supposed to be back in the rotation already, helping his team get back to the World Series. But, well, straining his groin on what was likely his last planned rehab pitch three weeks ago kind of changed all that.
The Dallas Morning News now reports that Hunter is getting set to start the rehab process all over again this weekend.
Hunter will take the mound Saturday for the Triple-A Round Rock Express and pitch two innings against the Albuquerque Isotopes, the paper reports.
Even though the Rangers have a stocked rotation, the team is not planning for Hunter to pitch in relief. Manager Ron Washington said he'd like to see Hunter pitch six innings or about 90 pitches before the club is ready to activate him, the paper reports.

Source: Dallas Morning News - The "bilateral weakness" that put Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer(notes) on the disabled list early this season appears to not be such an issue at this point. He finally strapped on catcher's gear and got down on his haunches behind the plate for some game action Thursday in an extended spring training game.
The 2009 American League MVP may have gone 0 for 5 at the plate but, more importantly, he "felt real good" behind the plate, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
"I didn't have the pain that I've been having in a lot of different areas," Mauer said, according to the paper.
Mauer also said his shoulder problems began last season when he was "compensating for other injuries," the paper reports.
"My shoulder was hurting last year, but my arm hasn't felt this good in a long time, so it's encouraging definitely," he said. "I'm able to move a lot better, and the ball is coming out of my hand a lot better than what it was. So yeah, slowly getting back to where I need to get to."

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Casey Kotchman(notes) has been out of action since Sunday when he sprained his right ankle in a game against the Cleveland Indians. MLB.com reports that he should be back in the lineup Saturday when the Rays do battle against the Seattle Mariners.
"He's getting better," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, according to the site. "[Head athletic trainer] Ronnie [Porterfield] thought that he was getting better, looked better. Hopefully, he's going to be on track for Saturday."
The Rays miss both his bat (.361 batting average) and his glove: MLB.com points out that Kotchman has made just nine errors in 5,168 total chances in his career, a .998 fielding percentage, the best in league history.
"He's one of the best at what he does," Maddon said, MLB.com reports. "We win games because we pitch well and play defense. When you get a defender of his caliber out of the game, it really matters.""

Source: MLB.com - Hideki Okajima(notes) has been a reliever for the Boston Red Sox since joining the league in 2007. Now he's hoping to ply his trade in another big league city, according to the Boston Globe.
Okajima currently is on the roster of the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, where he started the season, but he didn't want to be called up to replace the injured Rich Hill(notes). "I'd rather not be called up in this situation,'' he said, the Globe reports.
Okajima was called up earlier this season and went 1-0 with a 4.37 ERA over 8.1 innings in seven games. He was designated for assignment on May 20, cleared waivers and rejoined Pawtucket. "It's definitely a new start for me,'' Okajima said, the Globe reports. "I'm in a new position. It's all about pitching well and hopefully along the line another team will show more interest in me and I can be traded."

Source: Boston Globe - Barry Zito(notes) has won 40 games for the San Francisco Giants since joining the team in 2007. He's also lost 58. The injured hurler who was expected to be a much bigger winner for the Giants when he signed what was then the largest contract for a pitcher in league history -- seven years, $126 million -- is on the disabled list but about to start a minor league rehab stint, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The paper reports that Zito will be taking his 6.23 ERA and sprained right foot to the Single-A San Jose Sharks on Monday.
Before he gets there, though, the San Jose squad will be joined by Pablo Sandoval(notes) on Friday as he works on recovering from surgery on his right wrist. The expectation is that Sandoval will play a couple of games there and then move up to the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies for a few games before returning to the Giants, the Bee notes.
