Boston's Beckett returning Tuesday
Boston Red Sox hurler Josh Beckett(notes) missed his start Tuesday due to illness and because he hasn't improved, it appears he'll miss Saturday's start as well, according to the Boston Globe.
Beckett's next start is now scheduled for Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies in a meeting of the top teams of the American and National leagues. He is "expected to be ready" for the start, but the Globe points out that "it will be 12 days between starts" for Beckett.
He's gone 6-2 with a 1.86 ERA for the Sox this season and is slated to go up against the Phillies' Cliff Lee(notes) Tuesday.

Jim Thome(notes) and Joe Nathan(notes) are both expected to return to the Twins' lineup this weekend, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
"That's great to have [Thome to] come off the bench,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, the Strib reports. And Gardenhire is hearing good things about Nathan: "Everything they are telling me is that he's feeling great.''

Jeter comeback in holding pattern
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's(notes) comeback will likely need to be pushed back due to a persistent soreness in his strained left calf, the New York Daily News reports.
Jeter was expected to return to the team Wednesday but that is in "serious doubt," the News notes.
For now, Jeter is only cleared to throw. "He can't do anything with his legs," GM Brian Cashman said, according to the Daily News. "By this time frame, we clearly made the right decision putting him on the DL. Whether he's ready on the 15th day, the 16th day or the 17th day, I can't tell you exactly when he'll be ready."
Jeter may also have to make a minor league rehab assignment before returning to try and finish off his quest for 3,000 hits. He currently needs six more hits to join the elite club of those who've done it.

Phillies' Oswalt suffers more back pain, hopes career not ending
The Philadelphia Phillies had taken two games from the St. Louis Cardinals and were looking for a sweep Thursday night when Roy Oswalt(notes) took the mound. He gave up four runs in two innings and then left the game with lower back stiffness, MLB.com reports. It is unclear when he'll return to the rotation.
The Phillies went on to get crushed 12-2 by the Cards, but worse news is that the team may have lost one of its four aces. Of course, Oswalt wasn't exactly having a stellar season. He's now 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 starts.
Oswalt has already been on the disabled list this season with lower back problems. CSN Philly reports that Oswalt said after the game that the back pain is with him constantly: "I feel it when I sit down, stand up, walk, pitch, sleep," he said.
And, worse, the 33-year-old isn't sure when he'll pitch again: "You throw as long as you can and when you can't throw anymore, you don't," Oswalt said, CSN reports. "Hopefully it's not to the point where I can't throw anymore. If it's at that point, you just have to accept it."
Oswalt will have an MRI Monday. He will miss at least his next start.

Mets' Wright may return just after All-Star break
New York Mets third baseman David Wright(notes) has been on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his lower back since May 16. Newsday reports that he has been cleared to resume baseball activities. He's recently been taking ground balls on his knees.
The Newark Star-Ledger puts the timetable for his return to be just after the All-Star break. He will fly to Florida Friday to work out in Port St. Lucie.
"Prior to actually swinging the bat and beginning to work the trunk [of his body] excessively the way he would to play defensively or swing the bat, he needs to get loose and reintroduce those muscles," GM Sandy Alderson said, according to the Star-Ledger. "That's a several-day or maybe a week process. Then, you're talking about batting practice and a whole host of other truly baseball activities before playing in a game. This still could be some period of time."

76ers dealing Iguodala to Lakers?
One day after the Courier Times reported that there was no imminent trade involving Andre Iguodala, Sports Illustrated has it that the Philadelphia 76ers swingman could be moving to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers would be sending Lamar Odom to Philly in exchange, SI reports, but also states that "it's unclear whether the deal has real potential or is still alive." However, such a deal has been discussed between the two teams, Sports Illustrated reports.
Iguodala is under contract for three more seasons and is owed $44 million. Odom only has one more guaranteed year on his contract. He's due $8.9 million. Because of that, SI notes that another Lakers player would have to be in the deal in order to balance out the salaries.

A's Ellis moving to Giants?
Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis(notes), who has been with the team longer than any other current member of the roster, is now a utility player. That is thanks to the hot bat of rookie Jemile Weeks(notes), who took over the spot while Ellis was out with a slight hamstring strain.
In 53 at-bats, the 24-year-old Weeks is hitting .321 with four stolen bases and 10 runs scored. He was the A's top draft pick in 2008.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that "there is widespread belief" that the 34-year-old Ellis will be dealt across the Bay to the San Francisco Giants.
"I think there's a very good chance," one industry insider told the paper.
The A's are currently in last place in the American League West, 5 ½ games behind the Texas Rangers.

Mets' Davis may be headed to surgery
New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis(notes) hasn't played in a game since May 10 due to a sprained left ankle and it's looking like he may not be back anytime soon.
The New York Post reports that an MRI Wednesday "showed some cartilage damage in addition to a bone bruise," which may mean Davis needs season-ending surgery.
"Hopefully it starts healing up a little faster," said Davis, according to the Post. "After three weeks, we'll just have to see what else we have to do to get healthy."
GM Sandy Alderson said if Davis goes under the knife, he's surely done for the year: "I would say based on what I've heard from the doctors is if surgery is involved, anytime in the next three weeks, that he would be likely lost for the season," Alderson said, according to the Post.

Brewers' Marcum ready for next start
Milwaukee Brewers hurler Shaun Marcum(notes) could only pitch one inning against the Boston Red Sox on June 17 due to a hip strain. Wednesday, the Brewers let him go for three innings of the 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, during which he let in two runs and actually came to the plate in the third inning.
"I asked the trainers if the swinging was OK and they were fine with the swinging," said Manager Ron Roenicke, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "It was the third inning. I didn't want to use one of our bench guys. And I didn't want to have (Yovani) Gallardo do it or take a chance of (Zack) Greinke going out there cold and trying to hit 95 (mph)."
However, the paper reports that Marcum says he did feel the strain during his strikeout. "It was just that one swing that aggravated it and irritated it a little bit," he said, the Journal Sentinel reports.
Marcum didn't feel it while he was pitching and says he'll be fully ready to go for his next scheduled outing. He's 7-2 on the season now with a 2.95 ERA.
